Bhanu Suresh Babu Founder of CONCERN started in February 2008  and since then serves CONCERN as its Project Director.

She says "My father died due to alcoholism, and my husband was an alcoholic. I saw people affected by addiction, and how it affected their physical, mental and values lost life as that of mine and wanted to start a program to help the alcoholics recover."

"After my son was born, my husband's drinking and the disease progressed within a span of seven years. We experienced the depth of alcoholism. There was a serial on television on alcoholism and it was only through this, we came to know about TTK.- a pioneer and research institution in field of Alcoholism & Addiction "This institution's strenuous efforts has recovered about one lakh persons across the country from the dreaded disease called alcoholism.

"When I admitted my husband in TTK for addiction treatment in 1995, I learnt that alcoholism is a disease and can only be treated but not cured. Mrs. Shanthi Ranganathan, Director of TTK has been my source of inspiration. My husband is sober for over 15 years now. I have a son pursuing his Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture in Germany. I have dedicated my life for CONCERN as my family is settled now."

"I worked as a volunteer at TTK, after my husband was treated. Dr. Shanthi Ranganathan who was awarded Bharat Rathna by the Union Government of India, encouraged me to pursue my studies. I did my Bachelor's Degree, Master Degree in Psychology and M.Phil in Psychology and studied various courses related to addiction. I received many experience from a fellowship of caregivers of alcoholics and in the course of my pursuit to gain more knowledge on alcoholism and addiction I was introduced to Dr Azhar Hakim of Queen of Peace, a rehabilitation centre doing yeoman service in the field of addictions in the United States, From the rich knowledge he imparted on how to treat an alcoholic by using simple methods motivated me to start CONCERN,

As a caregiver I learnt that this was a life-long process and underwent a few counseling courses besides reading many books on addiction. I authored a protocol for a 15-day treatment, and made the treatment procedure simple, so that anyone who is willing to give up alcohol can walk into the centre with confidence and go out with a sense of confidence & hope."

"Prior to starting CONCERN I worked with several NGOs connected with de-addiction in order to gain experience. I worked with TTK for five years, taking care of rehabilitation and as a senior counselor in Freedom Foundation which is also engaged in the field of alcoholism & drug abuse. My husband works for a nationalized bank, and joins me in serving those affected by alcoholism. We named our organization CONCERN because we mean it. We have genuine concern towards alcoholics. We wish to see many families lead a happy life."

"The challenges I faced in the people who come for treatment, is that they come with a lot of opinions and theories about addiction. This is only a myth. The fact is that addiction to alcohol or any substance is connected to physical craving and mental obsession. Once, a person gets addicted to alcohol they require professional help and need to undergo treatment."ALCOHOLISM is a disease .The World Health Organization has declared this as a disease way back in 1956.

"We offer motivation to the patients when they arrive at the centre by a team of qualified professionals in Medicine, Psychology, Nursing etc We provide de-toxification treatment for three days, where IV fluids along with multi vitamins are provided and sleep pattern is regulated. Most of them will not be able to eat initially after this; they are provided psycho-therapy for 12 days. The psycho-therapy protocol is based on very important books on addiction. We make them understand their traits, thinking pattern errors and needs that are deprived."

"After the initial treatment, they are provided a relapse prevention therapy for a week period. Here, they are provided de-toxification and are counseled on prevention of relapse. In case, they relapse, they are put into a transit home where they can go to work from the rehabilitation home. They would be provided an anti-abuse treatment before they leave for work. This medicine would cause allergy to the body, if alcohol is taken."

"We treat alcoholism in a simple holistic manner we counsel family members to take care of the addicted family member to recover. A 15-day caregivers program is also offered by CONCERN to the family members."

Till date, 160 persons have been treated for alcoholism and we have seen 50% recovery rate. Others who relapse return voluntarily and strive to recover. Out-patient treatment is offered for those, who cannot get admitted for 15 days.

We also give awareness programs free of cost and willing to do with corporate and industries for the benefit of the employees and the employer.

Due to the current lifestyles people have very less time to get rehabilitated of priorities and tasks to complete so we have introduced "TELEPHONIC COUNSELING" which can be done home based at their possible hours and counseling "CARE GIVERS" are also done by telephone.

Confidential Home based care is also done to celebrities with signed agreement of anonymous treatment, the whole medical team signs the document.

Charges for de-addiction treatment are nominal and concession is offered for those who cannot afford the treatment. For further information, contact Bhanu Suresh Babu at…
