Opening remarks by Haritha with a couple of updates – 1. They enrolled for the ‘Library Education Course’ that is to be conducted by bookworm Goa; 2. Participants of the ongoing weekly library sessions are requested to send feedback, their experiences, and takeaways from these sessions – this can be done by sharing a 1–2-minute video or written feedback.
After this, the session started:
Session by Nilima garu on how to record read aloud and upload the same on YouTube. She suggested that this can be done using 3 simple steps: 1. Selection of the story for reading aloud, 2. Setup a single member GMeet/ Zoom meeting, then share the screen with the story PDF and read aloud the story (record the meeting while doing this), 3. Use video editor on Windows 10 to make the required edits and upload it on YouTube. Give credits to the author, illustrator, and publisher in the description section while uploading the video on YouTube.
The objective of doing such read aloud by Nilima garu – 1. Since she doesn’t have any direct interaction with kids, she uses this as a platform to connect with kids through an NGO called Techieride. 2. She believes such sessions can encourage reading habits in children.
Session by Manoj garu on aspects ‘during the read-aloud session’ – This session started with a recap on how to go about the pre-read aloud like the selection of the book, interacting with the listeners on the topic of the book even before revealing the story name or showing the book, interacting with the listeners after showing the cover page on what are the expectations from the book, etc and then start the read aloud.
During the read-aloud- first, choose a suitable place to do the read-aloud, have the seating for the listeners in such a way that all of them can easily see the book, and then start the opening conversation about the book. The reader should ensure that the book has a plot.
The reader should continuously interact with the listeners during the entire course of the read-aloud.
Further points added by Haritha garu – The book selected for read-aloud should have a rich language, the reader must ensure that the voice is modulated enough according to the storyline/ expressions of the story, teaching morals is not the primary purpose of a read aloud, the reader should not influence the listeners by his/ her thoughts on the story/ characters of the story. A session of read-aloud can stretch upto 2-3 days if required that is when a healthy discussion is going on about the story.
A book talk by Anitha on the book ‘bomma gurram’. Haritha garu suggested points of improvement like not giving away the storyline when probed with questions by the audience, highlight the feel of the book, and talk around it instead of talking about the actual storyline and she also categorized the questions asked by the participants into the text to the reader, text to world, hypothetical, inferential questions, etc.
